This was an interesting album, particularly from Hall and Oates It included participation from George Harrison, Robert Fripp, Todd Rundgren, Cheap Tricks' Rick Nielson and Steve Lukather from Toto.. I liked the album before it, 'Beauty On A Backstreet', though neither of the singles ('Why Do Lovers Break Each Others Hearts' and the great 'Don't Change') came close to the Top 40.. Much better is the live version they performed on A&E's 'Live by Request' a few years ago.. I absolutely hated 'It's a Laugh' when I bought the album, and still don't care for the studio version.

It's easy to understand why they abandoned this rockier direction, though, since neither of these albums was commercially successful.. Oates' 'Melody For A Memory' always stood out for me Since both Along the Red Ledge and X-Static were produced by David Foster, I guess fans should be glad he didn't force them to do dreary ballads like Chicago. Though their cover of You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling almost made it to the top 10, RCA paid a lot to get that performance and the album was selling.. I once owned this record, bought it at the time of it's release in 1978 I'd completely forgotton about it until I saw it on Amazon and noticed that it's out of print.. Not exactly names you would associate with H and O It was produced by David Foster.. Other standouts were, for me; 'It's A Laugh' and 'I Don't Wanna Lose You ' Overall an unusual and good offering from H and O..
